Welcome to a journey through the heart of Finland’s ironworks history!
Founded in 1561 by King Gustav Vasa, Mustio Ironworks was the first ironworks in Finland. Its history includes magnificent manor life, but in this lecture we turn our attention to the true builders of the ironworks. We take a deep dive into the everyday life of the ironworks village and its workers from the 17th century all the way to the early decades of the 20th century.
The lecture explores the fascinating history of the ironworks community and what life was really like in the heat of the blast furnaces, amid the pounding sounds of the hammer mills, and in the surroundings of Mustio Castle.
The lecture covers, among other topics:
Everyday life and professions at the ironworks:
Who were the respected blacksmith families, charcoal burners, craftsmen, and manor servants?
The development of the community over the centuries:
How did Mustio grow from a centre of iron production into a vibrant and self-sufficient village community with workers’ housing?
Human stories during historical turning points:
How did wars, such as the Great Wrath, and periods of economic growth affect the lives of ordinary workers, according to archival sources?
The lecture offers a fascinating insight into local history for genealogists, history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the unique past of Mustio.
